British Gas

I have been at a new build property for 10 months and my gas account won't take automatic readings nor will it accept manual readings.

I have been in touch with British gas on multiple occasions and keep getting told I'll be contacted but no one ever does get in touch.

When they finally get the issue sorted, can I refuse to pay the outstanding. I have told them that I don't think it's fair because they expect the debt that I have been chasing the whole time and they still haven't sorted after 10 months.

Have they been billing you based on estimated readings? Have you been paying a direct debit?

Look into back billing rules. You may be able to avoid paying for any usage prior to 12 months before the date when they eventually provide you with a bill, but not to the extent that you'd be eligible a refund.

I have been paying a direct debit since I moved in for just £10 which I know is obviously wrong (family of 3) and have been chasing it for months and just keep getting told my complaints handler will be in touch and then nothing.

I hope you've been setting aside additional funds for when the bill does come in. You should assume BG will get to this before the 12 months is up and legally you will have to pay for whatever energy you have used.

Have you used the meter readings you do have (although you can't submit then to your account) to roughly work out what you'll owe for the 10 months to date?

Have you been phoning them to give them readings?  If so what are they doing with them?  Surely they could be updating their system themselves!  (but then this is BG)

I have been giving them readings and they say they'll be in touch once it's been resolved and then I end up having to call again and they say theyll phone by the end of the day and don't. It's constantly back and forth
  • As it's a new build I assume there's an issue with the meter registration (plot/house number issue) are your neighbors experiencing the same issue?

What did your meter read when you moved in, was it zero or thereabouts? What does it read now?
Multiply the difference by 70p and that's roughly what you owe them.
