I have (had) a very dark room, blacked out window & door, illuminated by a dim red (occasionally green) light. The colour of the walls & woodwork doesn't really matter with that level of lighting.

If your place is small don't go too dark or it'll make it feel smaller. Are there any 'non negotiable' colours you *have* to work with - like floor covering, curtains, sofa etc? - I find that can often narrow things down a bit.

A colour scheme that flows through the whole property works well and makes it feel connected. I'd think this is more the case in a smaller property.

Free Bear, that room sounds well nice! We've ended up with a fair amount of pink, green, teal, burgundy etc.
I'm doing up the whole place, new carpets, paint job, curtains, new fixtures and furniture etc and I have an idea of what I want my place to look like. I know a small home with dark colours might look like a prison cell lol but I find small dark places that are low lit with a lamp or some skirting board led's really soothing and cosy.
Yeah, I get that, I have an office like a bowling alley and the side I stare at is a really dark green, I, love it, my wife hates it lol.

Little Greene are good - they have colour scales and show what colours work well together, their website is good for info and ideas too
