National Insurance Contributions Missing and no being paid still

Hi All,

My wife has checked her pension forecast and is currently set to get £160 per week at pension age. We have looked and she has several years missing full contributions. I have several questions so please bear with me.

1, we had our first child in 1997 and second in 2000. We claimed child benefit and was paid until we didnt qualify on childs age. for most of those years the report says she is missing fill contributions. I was lead to believe with child benefit its paid automatically?

2, She has two jobs, both earn around £500 a month, we have just noticed that neither are paying NI so the last few years they are asking for between £700 and £900 to complete those years.

3, She still has these jobs, can we tell the employers to pay NI as at the moment it seems she wont pay it again unless we make voluntary contributions.

4, I did a check on the HMRC website and added the two wages together as if one job, it said she should be paying £35,14 a month in NI. so how do we need to pay up to £800 for previous years?

Thanks, any advice would be brilliant.

    1. Only until the child reaches the age of 12.
    3. No. Employers have to pay in line with statutory requirements, so you can't 'tell' them what to do.
    4. Snag is that they aren't one job... The amount she would be required to pay to 'fill' a missing year isn't related to the amount which might (or in this case might not!) be payable by an employer, if she earned enough in one job to pay NI.

Here are the current rates: https://www.gov.uk/national-insurance-rates-letters

If your wife is earning around £500 a month, is there any chance she might her able to increase her hours with one or other employer to tip her into an earnings level where she would be credited with NI (albeit she wouldn't necessarily actually have to pay NI)?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

When you say that 'we' claimed child benefit, was the claim in your or her name ?

You wife needs to see if she can get any of her earnings from one of the jobs to be over the Lower Earnings Limit. This is currently £123 a week if paid weekly or £533 a month if paid monthly. That way she get's credited with NI but doesn't actually pay any.

Unfortunately for those in your wife's circumstances NI payments and credits are looked at on a job by job basis,

    1. Only until the child reaches the age of 12.

It was 12 only from 2010. From 1978 to 2010 it was 16.
