Does anyone know what this box thing is?

I'm guessing it's some kind of internet / tv outlet but it looks ancient. The phone number on it is an 0500 number which I've never seen before. I googled the number but no meaningful results are found.
I already have really good BT internet so can I just rip this thing off the wall and remove the cables that connect to it? One of the cables runs all the way around the skirting board and connects to another similar box on the other side of the room but that box doesn't have any connectors to it.

It’s a c30 year old cable TV box. The logo looks a bit like Cambridge Cable, who were taken over by NTL in the late 1990s.
No reason why it can’t be removed.4 -
