Problem with carpet

We had new carpet fitted approx 5 years ago. After 18 months we noticed that areas of the carpet had started to turn pale yellow or discoloured where the furniture had been on it. We complained about it and someone from the shop and an independent expert came to inspect the carpet and told us it was normal for this type of carpet - it’s 80/20 wool.
In the last year we’ve noticed the carpet now makes a crinkly noise when walking on it. It’s only when we had to remove part of it for a new door fitted that we discovered underneath it is dusty, almost like the carpet or the backing is disintegrating. Surely this shouldn’t be happening to the carpet already!
Has anyone experienced this or similar?

We’re due to have someone from the carpet shop to come out and inspect it. I’m concerned we might get fobbed off. The company has so far said ‘IF there is a problem’, but there clearly is. They have already been very slow to respond to me about this.

We had this problem with our 18 year old carpet but it was the underlay that was deteriorating and it was time for replacement anyway.1

Wool is very attractive to beetles and moths, have you checked for any signs of infestation? Do you clean the carpet with any liquids/carpet cleaners?1

There’s only two of us in the house so the carpet isn’t worn out.We have just found off cuts we stored in the loft and the backing on that has deteriorated. So somethings up with the carpet itself. We haven’t cleaned the carpets, no water or liquid on it.0

When you say the carpet backing, what material is it? Is it a kind of woven fabric, or what ?
Also what about the underlay? How thick is it and has that deteriorated as well ?0 -

Stains on carpet where furniture has been resting on it can come from the finish of the furniture.I've known this with pine furniture, so feesible with any wood or even from stuff used with mdf and plastic finish. So the carpet backing often deteriorates as it dries and becomes brittle. Usually the underlay will stop this happening for a lot longer. What underlay is it?
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on
The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

Update - carpet was inspected yesterday and they confirmed it has delaminated (backing has come away from the carpet), it is faulty.Next step is to sort out a replacement or refund etc.5
