CAZ payment to a scam website

Hi, I'm looking for some advice after a recent trip to Birmingham City centre. I paid the required CAZ and payment cleared from my bank as expected. However, today I have received 2 fixed notice penalties for non-payment. Having checked my bank I sew I've paid but on further examination it seems i have paid via a scam website, I didn't scrutinise the website as it was the first one that popped up. Clearly my error but will I be liable to pay these fines as I genuinely did 'pay' the required fees.
I have now reported said website to the official bodies but just can't afford to pay both these fines.
Any advice is welcome and thank you I advance.

But you paid the wrong people.
If you go into Sainsbury's and and buy a new coat but forget to pick it up once the security tag is removed, that doesn't mean you can go into Tesco and take away a similar coat without paying Tesco for it.
Of course you needed to pay whoever provided you with the service. You didn't do that.5 -
Any help from your bank?1

I was wondering if they used a credit card to pay ?
I would certainly contact the bank and ask for advice such as.... is a charge back possible etc .....then visit the bank in person but not sure if this fits your situation so would ask ?

Have you cancelled your credit card/bank card and asked for a new one with a new number?KeithP said:But you paid the wrong people.

There could be a workaround, if you can appeal this, the ftla site may be able to help more with this as you have been a victim of fraudFrom the Plain Language Commission:

Thank you Half_Way, yes cancelled my card just in case and bank has stopped any unauthorised payments.
Google gives mixed advice, as a victim of fraud they advise you don't have to pay hence my original query on here.

I think your best bet is to grovel to them explaining exactly what happened, but ftla is the place, but Birmingham is broke they want every penny they can get!1
