I bought my chair untried from Ryman. The chairs in John Lewis are at the upper end of the price scale, so if you want inexpensive and to try then IKEA is your best bet.
OP what you're proposing, i.e. going to John Lewis / a shop trying and then finding a cheaper price is known as showrooming.
Do you not have any office furniture shops near you?
Many, I'm in London. John Lewis has a couple of items at a discounted price. I can check other shops, even if discounts are often for display products.
If you need a specialist/ergonomic chair then there's Back 2 Chairs who do this. They do appointment only fitting in their London shop and I notice have a showroom sale on with some good discounts
