Also how to get the best deal for cheaper gas and electric

When you move in you will have a deemed contract with the existing supplier(s), so you need to call them to give them the initial meter readings  and your details. You can then switch to what ever supplier you choose for each service.

One big thing, if the meters come with a pre pay card do not use it get your own as it could have debt on it form the previous occupants.

As above find the current supplier and see what meter you have. Analogue or smart and that will determine what options you have.

As you mention gas it's unlikely economy 7 is a further complication but always worth bearing in mind.

The day you move in, photograph the meters to get a record of the readings.
If you need any help with them, share those photos on the forum here. Someone will have seen your make/model of meter before and will be tell you how to get the readings out of it and if there're any peculiarities with it!

Don't rely on meter readings taken by anyone else, insist on doing it yourself.  If not, you could end up paying for usage during a void period or by a previous occupier.
You won't know your annual consumption yet, so you might as well stay on the Standard Variable Tariff for the time being.  Try Octopus who have good ratings and you can share a £100 referral bonus with an existing customer.  They're now the biggest supplier so you're likely to know someone who's with them.
