Yes, they're a bit less than optimal... but that doesn't affect their enforceability.
It's the local authority's responsibility to make sure they're well maintained.
As you say, once you get to the built-up area, though, you've got the massive great big clue of streetlights with no repeaters. That - on its own - says "30 limit". The first streetlight is less than 200m past the 30 sign, and you've got the village name sign in that time.
You are, I'm afraid, bang to rights.
"I was too busy trying to keep the car on the road to see the other sign" suggests the weather conditions would have required the speed to be reduced anyway.
I'm sure the residents of the village will be quite happy at not being used as a motorway-avoidance rat-run at 50% above the limit.2 -
I think it's fortunate that your prosecution slipped behind the back of a filing cabinet. You would have to show that the limit was not "adequately conveyed". From your photographs, I doubt any court would find that.The sign on the offside is as clear as day.0
