Thank you all. Some complicated suggestions! Partitioning and other Gaelic terms.

The HD seems to have recovered. Or I'm misremembering what happened last time! I've connected it with the provided USB and can see everything that I had saved previously. So that's good. No popups demanding formatting.

I connect the phone using a USB adapter cable. I can see my phone in File Explorer. Navigate to pictures folder on phone, copy, and paste to folder on HD. And......

it's blooming copying them this time! Make me out to be a liar!

Thank you for all your advice - I genuinely appreciate it. Sorry for wasting your time. Moral of the story is to try more than once. I hate PCs/technology. Mybe the cloud is the way to go.

Maybe the way to go is the cloud AS WELL AS your external drive.

Next time this happens (hopefully it won't), just use a spare USB stick to copy the files onto.  Then use a computer to transfer the files between the USB stick and external hard drive.  Sure, it'll take a little longer, but at least your data is going to be safe.
I will never trust cloud storage.  You might as well hand over your files to the authorities that like to pry into people's lives.  While I'm not an Apple user, I do admire their stance with governments and not allowing them access to users' encrypted data:

Sound advice about using a USB stick as a medium to shift files to backup.

Re: not trusting cloud storage - if "The Man" really wants to look at your data then he will regardless of where you've got it stored.

I'd rather have easy access to cheap available ubiquitous backup and storage even if it means the authorities might have to spend 10 minutes less trying  to access my stuff.

If you've really got data that must be protected then by all means stuff it on an encrypted drive. Everyday photo backup - automatically straight to cloud.
