What does the share allocation statement actually refer to, i.e. does it identify exactly which company any shares related to - I didn't think that Birmingham Midshires issued shares, as it was a building society until purchased by Lloyds group?

For BAE, you'd need to contact their registrar to find out what your holding is and whether it would be worth paying the lost certificate fee:

Birmingham Midshires was bought by Halifax Bank in 1999 and paid its members in, IIRC, 200 or 400 Halifax 6.475% redeemable preference shares which became Lloyds 6.475% preference shares with the LSE ticker LLPE. They were redeemed at par (100p per share) on 15/09/24. The OP could try contacting Lloyds' registrar.
