We are currently in a grade 1 listed cottage, which is small, but has single-glazing and no woodburner. The cottage is solely electric and we have storage heaters, in the winter our bills are up to £400. The rent is just under 1k. We have today looked at a bigger house, with secondary glazing, powered by LPG, which I know nothing about, there is also a woodburner. A quick search online would suggest it's pretty good, but can anyone advise? We are in a small 2 bedroom cottage at the moment, this is a big two bedroom house with two outbuildings with electricity, which we would be using. Our current council tax band in C, this new house would be D. There is also a septic tank. The rent is almost double. We can afford both properties but I don't know anything about LPG and septic tanks, if they are any good / or money pits? Any advice?

As you will be renting the concerning septic tank won't be your responsibility and make sure emptying it is your landlords responsibility as well.

LPG is efficient and better than your storage heaters and if you have access to free wood the wood burner is a no brainer for efficiency

We will be renting from national trust so septic tank is our responsibility unfortunately. My partner is a carpenter so free wood is plentiful!

I cn't speak for your septic tank but my parents had one. It only needed emptying once in 30 years. Other than that, it was trouble-free.

Circa £300 for a septic tank survey if it concerns you?

And asking questions like last time it was emptied.

You need to find out what you can or rather cannot dispose of into the septic tank!

Interesting! Yes to asking when it was emptied or asking them to do so before we move

Great. Is it provided by a specific provider?

My parents disposed of a dead goat into theirs ...
But it's the usual sorts of thing.
    Definitely OK:
    • Things you have previously eaten or drunk
    • Toilet paper
    Probably OK:
    • Tampons
    • Sanitary towels
    Avoid:
    • Moist wipes
    • Baby wipes
    • Paper towels
    • Condoms
    • Other household waste
