No, I made the mistake all be myself.  The guy rang me this morning from the bank and they have put the money back into my account.  I am truly humbled and gave him £50 for his trouble.  My faith in human beings has been restored.  Thank you for all your advice.
That sounds so much like you are saying a person from the bank rang you to say they've put the money back into your account and then you gave them £50. How?

Or do you mean the hedgecutter guy who charges £200 for a hedge trim went to a bank and called you from his mobile phone to say that £1800 would be returned and then you retransferred £50 to him.
Or you said "Nah, just send me £1750".
Or the bank credited you with £2000 and you retransferred £250 back to the hedge cutter?

Anyway, hope your account is now in credit to the amount you are expecting.
Nope, I'm not actually stupid, I just made a mistake by adding an extra zero on.   The money is in my account.

Thanks to all those who gave me constructive advice and were supportive.   The guy turned out to be a hardworking,  honest man who was not good with technology, he was in his 70's.    This has taught me a lesson not to prejudge and not to be prejudiced.    I assumed this man was a traveller/gypsy and that I would never get my money back.  I am glad to be proved wrong.  Thank you all again.

£200 for cutting a hedge sounds expensive unless it was a big job or intricate

yes,  it's a big hedge and hasn't been cut for 3 years.  I'm usually charged around 2-250.

You pay not just for the time it takes someone to cut your hedge, whatever size that hedge may be. You also pay for the worker to have transport, insurance and tools, and for disposal of the cuttings. Depending on the size of the overall income, and the honesty of the worker, the taxman also takes a cut.

The lesson you have learned doesn’t seem to quite extend to travellers and gypsies 😉

Yes, it clearly does.  That was my lesson learned.  No to prejudge and not to be prejudiced.  Can't be much clearer than that!
