I have a 2022 macbook pro and the right side of the screen is black for about 2cms.  I haven't dropped it or anything.  is this a known problem, what should I do?

Connect to an external screen/TV via HDMI.

If problem follows its a graphic issue, if it goes away its a problem with the screen.

If you bought it from Apple take it into an Apple store and they will look at it for you

Have you run Apple Diagnostics? https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102550

If you bought it in 2022 then it should be a M1 or M2 MBP? In which case no, there are no wide spread screen issues reported. The M1 did have reports of high SSD use and the M2 of overheating in the base model but neither would cause screen problems.

Did you buy it from Apple or someone else? Did you buy AppleCare? Your rights are with the retailer not the manufacturer assuming you didnt buy AppleCare and whilst Apple will inspect it for free if you didnt buy it from them expect the usual comment that had you they'd have been dealing with it for you but as you didnt you need to go speak tot he retailer or they'll charge you £450 to replace it

Go into Settings -> General -> About

At the top you'll have name, chip, memory, serial and then your warranty/AppleCare status and a details button. The field isnt labeled as such but with mine for example it just says "Coverage Expired". If you hit the details button then a popup window opens saying warranties ended and no AppleCare

It looks as if the cover has expired!  Might be expensive!   I will try to get get an estimate next time I am near a store.  Wonder if there are any trusted independents near me.

Apple have approved repairers, you can find them on their website. There are plenty of other places that will repair them and may or may not claim to use genuine parts etc.

Is it the 14" MBP or the pseudo 13" MBP that has a non-pro/max chip? If its the 14", wear your brown trousers, it was surprising how much it was for mine (mine was impact damage not a fault)

Thanks it is the 13 inch M2, I didn't know there were different M2 chips but for the price I paid, it was less than a month old when I bought it unused and still sealed in the box, it has been brilliant.

Theres M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max and M2 Ultra, each has two variants depending on how many cores it has. When the M2 was about you could get the new 14 or 16 inch with a M2 Pro or M2 Max or the old 13 inch with an M2 which was the same as was in the 13" MacBook Air.

It was somewhat criticised as it had old design and same processor as the Air but it does have a fan so in principle could be pushed hard longer. That said, having failed, it is cheaper to repair than the 14" as it is older tech
