High estimated gas bill after meter not working after change of provider.

Hi, we changed our gas and electricity supplier in November to EDF and something went wrong with the set up and the gas usage wasnt being registered. We contacted them when we realised and said we are happy to pay for what was missed, but asked if we would be able to spread across future bills rather than in one hit. They assured us this would be fine and not to worry. But now we have just received a bill for the last 4 months gas usage estimated at £1700 a! Based on what our smart meter tells us since the issue with the gas meter was rectified in these winter days were using about £6 worth of gas a day and the bill even tells us that our estimated annual cost based on latest usage is £950.

Obviously we are going to call them and query this high estimated bill, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar and what the outcome was.

Thanks in advanced

Can you give us the meter reading that you gave to theold supplier when  you changed - is this the same as EDF's opening bill.

What is the reading today -  take the reading from the Smart meter itself , not from the In House Display *toy in your kitchen) ?

Hi Robin, thanks for your reply. Just spoke to my partner about this as she set the account up. I asked if we gave them a reading when we signed up and she said yes but EDF somehow lost it.

    So the bill states
    3 Oct 2024  0.0000 customer reading
    1 Jan 2025 1696 estimated reading
    2 Feb 2025 2696.3030 smart meter reading.

I asked do we have the closing reading from Sainsburys energy and that states
1 Oct 1917.9 Smart meter reading
2 Oct 1920.0 Smart meter reading
    3 Oct 1922.2 Estimated reading

Im not going to lie, all this stuff confuses me, but writing this down now (and assuming the meter reading from the closing bill carries over), am right in thinking theyve over charged us by roughly 2000 units? Or am I misunderstand this totally?

Yes, EDF have failed to apply the closing reading of 1922.2 from your Sainsburys to your new account. Get them to re-bill on that basis.

Yes, EDF have charged you for 1922.2 units that you've previously paid Sainsbury's for.

@MeteredOut I think you've missed a "not" from that sentence?
"EDF have NOT applied the closing reading of 1922.2 from your Sainaburys to your new account."

It was actually a "failed to" i missed, but yes, and since corrected :)

Please read the Smart meter -  asap - this is the meter in a box or garage -not the In House Display. Watch out for decimal point.

The Jan 1st 2025 appears to be a considerable underestimate.

So the final reading from Sainsbury on 3 Oct should be the same as the opening at EDF... Send a copy of that bill to EDF

    Units - in m3 - used Oct  to now is 2686 - 1922 = 764 To get kWh multiply by 11.2 (approx) = 8500 kWh  @ 4p = £340 add standing charges and Vat gives £450 in the 4 months (quite average)

Thanks all. My partner spoke to EDF and they agreed its well off and weve emailed over the final bill from sainsburys. Theyre going to get back to us with a revised bill. Was just worried that they would be difficult so wanted to understand what was going on beforehand.
