There's an article in the current Computer Active.  Saying there is a scam going around with people (posing as BT) asking for payment offering to upgrade their landline to digital for a fee, and then threatening to disconnect their landline if they don't pay.

Unfortunately there will always be scams , and those naive enough to fall for them , strangely given that BT have substantially less than 30% of the market , it seems odd to mention any particular provider, 7 in 10 of these calls should be immediately ineffective, why would BT be ringing a Virgin , Sky , Vodafone, Talk Talk , Zen or any if the other dozens of providers customers …for these the response is simple , ‘ I’m not a BT customer ‘ and you gang up , for the relatively few that are BT customers they should say ‘ Ive  got BT’s number I’ll ring you back’ , or ask ‘what’s my name ? ‘ or ‘whats  my account number ? ‘ neither will the scammer be able to provide …if they bleat about ‘data protection’ you know its not a genuine call , but scam calls are  the way if the world , unfortunately, BT make strenuous efforts to intercept calls like this but catching them all is impossible
