There is Kroo if you want as your money will earn interest whilst it is sitting in the account and you can separate it into pots if you want to as well.

You are likely to find that most banks will not allow you to open a Basic Bank Account if you qualify for a standard bank account.
To clarify this a little further TSB, Co-op Bank and Santander allow applications for their basic accounts from anyone.

The majority of the accounts with the challenger banks like Starling are used as secondary accounts, which is not profitable for them.
Not necessarily true. If you leave a sizeable deposit in a "backup" bank account earning no interest then that's likely to be very profitable for the bank. (Don't do this!)

The problem I’ve found in my search so far is any account wants to become my main current account.

Don't worry about that - they all want to be your main account but its not about them.

Just pick a bank and apply for their general current account (make sure it's fee-free though).

The Natwest Select (or RBS if you prefer) account could be an option. No fee, decent app and can use the Get Cash option at Natwest/RBS/Tesco ATMs without needing a bank card.

My point was that in aggregate secondary accounts are not profitable for them. As you say, some individual secondary account may be profitable. Tesco could not sell its current account business because it did not have many accounts and those that it did have were mostly secondary accounts. Earlier in the thread, it was reported that Starling now refuses applications to open accounts unless you say that you intend to use the account as a primary account.

I think that may be a misinterpretation of my possibly slightly ambiguous earlier post.

I meant that I declined opening the account as a primary current account and they accepted it and let me open one anyway – it could be read as it was declined.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, I was thinking Starling as well. Seems to suit what you want.
Also has a pot with a connected debit card, to keep it separate from the main account

With Starling you can also have a space with a virtual debit card and add that to your mobile wallet. That seems like the ideal solution as you'd only need one bank account then.
