Travel Insurance

For Nationwide members who have the Flexplus current account (which includes travel insurance), a reminder.... Nationwide has changed its travel insurer to Aviva. My upgrade for a trip to Australia was refused because of an underlying health issue. I've been in remission for this health issue for about 10 years now and recieve no treatment but because I have an appointment with a specialist every 6 months for a quick chat and check over I am deemed to be " still under the care of a specialist " and as such Aviva will not cover me. Nationwides previous insurer were not bothered with the condition because I was in remission. Its going to cost me a lot now to get travel insurance for the trip. By the way Nationwide charge £18.00 a month for the Flexplus account.

The NHS for whatever reason are considering it serious enough to spend hundreds a year on monitoring you for the condition so doesn't sound as if its as all fully cleared up and never to return as you make out. My own congenital medical condition that I take 2 meds a day for since I was 2 years old I only see a doctor every 2 years for.
Travel insurance is a budget product and as such it takes a simplistic approach to underwriting. Were you applying for PHI or such that would be a commitment of thousands a year in premiums then they'd get medical records, test results maybe get you to see their own doctor and may come to a different conclusion but aviva are probably getting circa £50 per year for you with no long term commitment and so have basic rules that are cheap to implement but may mean some slip through the net and some are caught by the net that more thorough investigation may have cleared.0 -
