Delonghi Microwave

I
bought a Delonghi microwave from Argos (they were made especially for
Argos) in Dec 2019. The microwave has just stopped heating items. After
doing some research online I have discovered that the magnetron (the part
that heats the food) has been wired into the microwave incorrectly -
because of this the units lifespan has been considerably reduced. There
are only 2 pins on the magnetron and the wires are supposed to be
connected a certain way but at the manufacturing stage they were put on
the wrong way round - from other online posts I have discovered that
this is common in this model and all of them have been failing well
short of their expected lifespan.
As
the microwave is 5 years old do you think I should expect a free
repair, replacement or refund as it is a manufacturing fault? Or am I
wasting my time.
I have approached Argos but I've received no reply as yet.

At this late stage you will have to go back to the manufacturer, Argos will not be able to help you ( although they can send it for repair, they can't say if it would be free or not that's for DeLonghi to decide)
TBH most items of that sort only last about 5 years anyway, sadly0 -
You only have legal rights with whoever you bought the microwave from (Argos in this case). Those legal rights are contained in the Consumer Rights Act 2015
You have no contract with the manufacturer DeLonghi and therefore no rights with them
At this late stage you need to show Argos that your oven has failed prematurely because of a fault which was present when you bought it, and that failure is not due to anything which has happened since such as running the oven with nothing inside to absorb the microwaves.
If you can do that Argos must replace, repair or refund. Any refund can be reduced because of the use you have had, and after 5 years use you should not expect more than 20% of what you paid.
How did you pay? If you paid by credit card and the cost was more than £100, you might also be able to claim against your credit card issuer if you have the evidence above.0 -
Many thanks Alderbank. That's kind of what I was expecting.Although Argos/Delonghi are definitely in the wrong I think I will be on a hiding to nothing. It wasn't paid for on a credit card. But I do think it is very important to flag this error on Argos/Delonghi's part - have they done it deliberately to reduce the life of the unit or is it incompetence?!!!Whichever, it should be corrected for future production if they are still carrying out this practice.0
