Our neighbours created a 'feature' right across the chimney breast and into both alcoves with Cotswold stone.  That brought the fire surround by about the distance the OP mentioned.  It was a popular thing to do back in the 70s.

That would be my guess too. Whoever built it thought it was a nice feature at the time.

It was 'd'business' back in the day. Everyone on the telly were doing the wood mantles and various stone effects were 'trending'
I've seen the whole room stone walled or all along the room. You do look and think 'That's some statement!'

Put brick and wood fire surround uk into an image search and you'll see people are still doing it and some are HUGE!

Glass bricks, lime green and orange rooms, various tile effects - I lived through the brown era when I had huge admiration from friends for doing all brown wall to wall carpets which was a thing.

When my sister-in-law moved into a house in the mid 80s there was a stone built monstrosity, full height of the chimney breast, tapering towards the top.  If it had continued up it would have matched the Pyramids.  She hated it but her husband wasn't keen on DIY (read bone-idle).  She and her mate demolished it one day when he was at work!

When I moved into my first place I found a roll of 'stone effect' wallpaper in the loft, probably from the 60's or early 70's as it was the type you had to trim the edges off yourself.

That roll would probably be worth £££ now if I'd kept it rather than using it as lining paper.  :/

A couple of hours with an SDS drill or a demolition hammer, and it will look like this.
Strip the flowery paper off the wall, and give it a skim of plaster. But before you do, give some thought as to whether you would reinstate a proper fireplace (not recommended), or a small stove. If you install a stove, you'd need to use a heat resistant plaster (either lime or HACS) as regular gypsum plaster will crack & flake off when exposed to temperatures above 50°C.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Oh that's perfectly normal Sapindus - for it's time.
Must say I haven't seen worse of this era but it's small enough to get rid of.
Then saying that I searched 'brick fireplace trends 2024' and they are still doing it (and still doing it badly) so bang up to date that house :)
Try the search yourself and you'll see that fireplace represented over and over.

What's your plan for the fireplace? E.g. Keep it as an open fire, install a woodburner, block it up?
