credit card deposit bank transfer balance

should the same person that paid the deposit pay the balance?
i.e. paid the deposit on a used car for my son. Should I pay the balance or can he and retain all the consumer rights afforded by the credit card?

Consumer rights are based on who the buyer is which will be the name on the invoice/contract.

Section 75 rights require the Debtor, Creditor, Supplier chain to be unbroken so the sale of the car would have to be to you, assuming it was your credit card and you are the primary account holder.

Neither of the above will care who actually made the balance transfer strictly but may be used to argue who the purchaser really was.

I wouldn't worry about the credit card (Section 75) rights.  These provisions simply make it easier to exercise your rights under the Consumer Rights Act (for example).
For car insurance purposes, it makes sense for you your son to be both the registered keeper and legal owner of the vehicle.

By paying for your son's car  you won't have S75 protection as your are not the beneficiary of the sale.

    See FOS decision here https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/decision/DRN-5071533.pdf

Your son has no contract with the CC  supplier so he does not have any protection.

He would need to pay with a credit card in his own name to get protection.
