Lowell Chasing small BT debt (possibly)

Asking for some help!
Just received a letter in the post from Lowell - they say they have brought an outstanding BT debt and are encouraging me to pay it.
There is an accompanying letter from BT confirming the same.
Total amount "owed" is £ 25.00 so not a big deal in the overall scheme of things
However, despite BT claiming they have tried to contact me on numerous occasions, I have not received any previous correspondance from them about an outstanding amount.
I can't recall the last time I had an account with BT though have undoubtedly had their products and service in the past.
So question is - should I just pay it off? Should I ask for some documentary evidence of the debt? Ignore it?
I obviously don't want to damage my credit file but also don't want to just hand over money without at least some clarification of what it was for?

Ask for evidence and if it isn't 100% clear AND something that happened in the past 6 years, then ignore it.
They won't be taking it further for £253
