After having cats for years, being able to work some days at home, gave me the opportunity to own a dog.  I have a small house with a small garden but a park nearby.  My list was for a small dog, not a puppy but under 2 years. One that does not shed.  My niece found the ideal dog for me, a re-home.  Cross breed with a Yorkie dad so no slobbering.  She has two walks a day but will go out in the garden  before bed and if she requests.  She is not a breed but is idea for me.  She does have to go to the groomers every 3-4 months. So I can recommend a x-breed!  All dogs are different as said before.  Small place, go for a small dog.  And do not go for a working dog!

Forget getting a dog - get another cat instead.

Our cat plays 'fetch'.  - She brings a toy to us for us to throw, so she can catch it - and bring it back to us.  Rinse, repeat.

We have one who jabs me in the side with a toy / egg shell / nativity donkey / etc to throw for her to play fetch.
We have a daft cat who races like an idiot to get to where you've thrown an item and sits there waiting excitedly for you to run over and throw said item again.

I think a cat can copy a dog more than vice versa? Our youngest (rescue) acted very like a dog when he arrived but has learnt to be a cat. Unless you need motivation to go for a walk, do you need a dog? They can be more restrictive on your life than cats (can't easily leave at home when you want a mini break). Do you have time to train a dog, they require more input initially than cats.

May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.

A miniature or toy poodle - from a very reputable breeder, because many of them have health problems. They are small enough to be able to exercise themselves inside the flat, they generally get on well with cats, they don't shed. You can teach a poodle lots of useful tasks they can do for you to keep them occupied - fetching your 'phone, slippers/shoes, getting out the cat treats, taking your washing into the kitchen for the washing machine - they are very, very clever but you do NEED to train them otherwise they will train themselves to do things you don't want. Easy to carry up the stairs if you need to - please bear this in mind if you are in an upstairs flat, all dogs get old eventually
