I'd disagree with an earlier poster that there isn't much to do, but that's because it's very subjective.

Fully agree it's subjective but for only a short 5 day holiday you spent 2 of those days outside of Dubai and one of those was outside the Emirate of Dubai. Feels more akin to saying that going to Paris is great because you can go to the Champagne region easily or get good well priced wine down in Bordeaux.

The wider UAE is more interesting than Dubai but assumed we were considering the city itself not the whole country or Arabian Peninsula.

Paris to Bordeaux is rather further than Dubai to Abu Dhabi and I'm hardly suggesting consideration of the whole Arabian peninsula.  I didn't travel to any point further than about 90 minutes from my hotel.  That feels local to me.  I live in London and would take approximately the same time to travel to the other side of London on an average day.

I actually would say one of the things that makes Paris great IS because you can take a day trip to the Champagne Region or Rouen or any other place that you may be able to visit in a reasonable amount of time.  I consider the connectivity of a city to other places to be a feature or a draw for me.

A couple of examples more: Vienna IS great because you can go there and also easily visit Bratislava and vice versa.  Copehagen IS great because you can easily visit Malmo and vice versa.  Things that I have done whilst visiting those cities.

I didn't visit Abu Dhabi because I'd run out of thing to do or was bored in Dubai (I'd actually have liked to have Scuba Dived in the 60m deep pool but my partner doesn't dive and doesn't wish to), likewise, I'd not run out of things to do in Vienna or Copenahgen when I visited those other places but I would recommend Dubai because there is plenty to do in the city AND you can easily explore outside the city and even the Emirate of Dubai if you wish.

If you have kids (or enjoy water parks as an adult) then Atlantis is well worth a visit. There is also Wild Wadi water park next to the Burj Al Arab that's smaller but still a good option.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
