I always prefer Royal Mail as their list of exempted items is nowhere near as long as most couriers. A medium parcel would be £9.75 special delivery.

Obviously avoid signed for and standard parcels as the compensation limits are too low, and for that value you don't need a signature.

Step 2 - Service - Royal Mail Click & Drop | Send an item - Click. Save. We Collect

As we're on a money saving site, so nothing against RM, if you go to parcel2go.com there are a lot of options for under 1kg. From the cheap, and not necessarily cheerful to next day delivery. Be wary of collection charges but there are drop off options and various services. I tend to use UPS but they collect from me and, as with all delivery services, have some who don't like them.
P2G offer RM services too so gives you a chance to compare.

Worth noting P2G doesn’t always offer the same cover as going direct, I’ve noticed this on Parcelforce and I think RM Tracked. I think their prices are the same as going direct so you can end up with a worse deal depending upon value.

For an easy life I’d stick to Special Delivery for £240.
