    Do you need free Post Office access?

    If yes, that excludes Nationwide,;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    No it doesn't     You can bank, inc Nationwide,  at most banks - just need envelopes,

    and don't forget the new Banking Hubs.
    According to the PO website, you can withdraw money from a Nationwide account but can't pay in, either cash or cheque.
    Yes that's true you just can't deposit at the moment because they are guaranteeing to remain in every town and expanding branches currently.

    The current Barclays fiasco (I think that is the recognised headline writers' term :) )
    Tsk, no! The correct tabloid term for any kind of technology malfunction is "Meltdown!".

    My main accounts are with Santander. My back-up accounts are with HSBC and Virgin Money with a very modest emergency amount in their linked savers. HSBC also has Visa cards which I have as back-up for my Santander Mastercard credit and debit cards.

    If you're married (and I accept that you might not be!) then having a joint account plus separate personal ones gives additional redundancy.
    Although Mrs QrizB and me have each got two current accounts plus a joint one!

    Nationwide issues Visa cards which hopefully will work when your Santander MasterCard is down. Provided that you do not apply for an overdraft, they do their best to make sure that nobody can overdraw your account, and do not hold you liable if they do. You can use it as small payments account to keep it active.

    Believe whatever you wish - I take it you still believe in Santa Claus because Nationwide told you.

    Believe the Santander downtime being referred to is hypothetical.
