Access number for Government Gateway

I set up my Government Gateway account years ago. And use the app nowadays. Every so often you need to enter a 5 digit number to access your account. This is currently sent to my landline number as a voice message. How do I go about changing it to my mobile number? Also it gave me the option to have the access number sent to my app. So I tried that out of curiosity but nothing happened and I am not even sure how it would appear!

    Sign in to your account.

Go to Profile and settings > Sign-in details > Change > How to get access codes

Edit : If you have used the "stay signed in for 7 days" option you cannot make changes until that session has expired, so just sign in as a one-off next time to make the change.

    Change your phone number

You can change the phone number you use to get security codes to sign in. To do this:

    1. Sign in to your GOV.UK One Login.
    2. Go to ‘Security’.
    3. Under ‘How you get security codes’, find the row for ‘Text message’ and select ‘change’.
    4. Enter your password and select ‘Continue’.
    5. Enter a new phone number and select ‘Continue’.
    6. Check your phone for a text message containing a security code.
    7. Enter the security code and select ‘Continue

If 6 is the new phone, doesn’t this render the security code pointless?

What’s the difference between the Government Gateway and Gov.uk one? Is one replacing the other or just accessing different departments?

There are many different .gov log ins giving access to different and sometimes the same services.

Found this if it’s any help

How do I change my Government Gateway phone number?
If you have changed phone numbers since you last logged in to your government gateway account, you will need to contact the HMRC's online services helpdesk who can deactivate the old phone number so that a new one can be linked to your log in details.
