ATM fees Australia

Just done an experiment trying to withdraw £300 or 600 dollars from ATMs in Sydney with Chase card (although might also apply to other UK cards).
Commonwealth bank branch ATM wanted 7.50 dollar ATM fee. Westpac wanted 6 dollars, but ANZ bank was fee free.
I was charged no fees at all for withdrawal and got a straight 1.995 exchange rate to the pound
So recommend ANZ bank for ATM withdrawals in Australia

Thanks for this, we are off there at Easter. I knew Aussies get banking fees charged for everything, DD, card payments cheques etc. but had no idea they were so high.barnehurst said:Just done an experiment trying to withdraw £300 or 600 dollars from ATMs in Sydney with Chase card (although might also apply to other UK cards).

Good info for now, but things are changing fast with ATM charges, it used to be rare for ATMs to charge, now it's rare they don't. I got charged by an ATM of a bank last year that was free the year before (not in Aus).barnehurst said:Just done an experiment trying to withdraw £300 or 600 dollars from ATMs in Sydney with Chase card (although might also apply to other UK cards).

I guess people use far less cash these days so it becomes more expensive to maintain ATMs per withdrawal.

Useful information, thanks for flagging up - is ANZ a major bank down under, with a decent network of branches and ATMs ?

Yes, they are one of the main banks out there and operate throughout the country.NoodleDoodleMan said:Useful information, thanks for flagging up - is ANZ a major bank down under, with a decent network of branches and ATMs ?3 -
ANZ bank ATM was still fee-free when I drew out AUS$ with my UK Chase card yesterday (16/3/25)1

I found that as well last week using my Wise card.binbagbob said:ANZ bank ATM was still fee-free when I drew out AUS$ with my UK Chase card yesterday (16/3/25)
Previous week I used WestPac and sucked up a A$6 charge on a withdrawal of A$350.I had a reminder as to how lucky we are in the U.K. not to have ATM withdrawal fees at bank branches, or even to have no extra charge to use a debit or credit card when paying in a shop, bar or restaurant. Australia seems to add anything between 1%-2% each time you pay by plastic.1 -
No reason to use in cash in Australia. Everywhere takes cards.0

Certainly a high proportion of card use but still I like to have some cash to use. Some farmers and craft markets still had vendors which are cash only. Ditto some of the pop up food trucks. Perth’s excellent transport system also still does not take credit card or bank cards for rides. You either need a local transport “smart” card or cash.penners324 said:No reason to use in cash in Australia. Everywhere takes cards.
You are also paying a surcharge on card use.0
