You have to sympathise with HMRC sometimes,
Similarly, I also have sympathy for a human who is unfamiliar with the topic, up against a deadline, and fears 1,000 lashes.
Then he reads a bald statement from HMRC quote "Total due by 31 January 2025   £2,131.50" unquote... and so he pays it.
How hard would it have been for HMRC to mention "excluding PoAs made" on that same or adjacent line for clarity to the customer.
(I have commented elsewhere about how impenetrable is this year's tax calculation layout eg where personal allowance has been reallocated. HMC don't take enough care over such things.)

There is doubtless room for improvement.

But that section of the calculation is headed with the statement,

This amount does not take into account any 2023-24 payments on account you may have already made

Maybe the real problem is leaving it till the last minute?  31 January is the final day to file, not a target to aim for 😉

Sorry, been away for a while and just got back to this thread... all responses most appreciated (honestly!). I understand people saying it is clear from the HMRC, however I was only trying to respond to, what I thought (based on the messaging from HMRC), was a genuine response to pay 'Total Due' payments... hey ho, live and learn.

I have just checked my account and I see credit so I will now consider a refund or leave in for tax year 2025/6, but why should I?
