Can't you pay them in to your bank account via the post office?
That's an interesting one - I doubt it, as you're not depositing it into a Post Office account. But it's certainly worth asking :)

I don't think that anyone is disputing that you can deposit cash to most bank accounts via POs, but surely the question is whether this includes old notes that have been withdrawn from circulation, which that page doesn't seem to address?
But this page does and confirms you can pay them into a bank account (obviously where that bank allows deposit at the PO).

Thomas exchange in Oxford Circus will accept small amounts of old sterling notes if you are using them to pay for travel money, for no extra charge.

Or if you are swapping straight into sterling there is usually a small commission fee.

My local town's main post office recently accepted a bunch of old £20 notes to be deposited into my high street bank account with no quibbles.

Just pay them into your bank account using your debit card at the the Post Office or your own bank.

When you visit The Bank, don't forget they have a very interesting museum attached (free admission).

Includes the history of banknotes with many examples, including no doubt those you should have exchanged years ago.
Yes I've been there, it's quite an interesting way to spend a few hours, and you can also touch a real gold bar. Weighty things they are, and look larger in real life.

Also just bear in mind your mileage may vary with the post office deposits with old notes. I went to pay in some old notes once as it was a few mins walk away from where I lived, it was refused as the person behind the counter saw they were old notes.
I've never had trouble paying in such items at a bank branch of any of the large banks, accepted happily without quibble.

Since the post office is franchised the level of service and knowledge will vary with the staff on duty. I've been to some completely awful ones where they didn't know what to do or they were shut when the post office website said they were open. And been to others where the staff have been efficient and been in and out quickly.
