Ive moved into a house that has E7 meter but has no storage heaters. All our heating is via gas and because i work from home most of the electricity is used during the day. I believe you pay more during the day on E7 which is no good to me. How do you go about kicking the E7 system into touch? Does anyone know how much it costs to put a new meter in? cheers

Hi, i think i'm right in saying that you don't actually need to get your meter changed to a one rate meter. Let me know if im wrong someone!;)
As long as you make sure that you are on the one rate version of whatever tariff you're on with your electricity supplier then you don't need your meter changed.
All they will do when it's time to bill you is add up how many night and day units you've used giving you one combined amount- basically the same as a 'normal' meter.
However,if you are adamant you want your meter changing i think most suppliers would do it free of charge.0 -
As stated above, you don't need a new meter.
I have done exactly what you want to do(with BG) and my E7 and day consumption are added together and treated as 'normal' consumption.
e.g 200kWh on E7 and 1,000kWh on daytime are simply treated as 1,200kWh.0 -
I think you will find that not all companies will do as cardew and dell suggest (however logical and easy it would be!)
My MiL was in the same situation as you but with Atlantic, I arranged for the E7 to be converted to normal but they would not add the 2 readings together, instead said they would change the meter (20 min job) at NO COST. Job well done.0 -

Good morning: We removed storage heaters and installed gas central heating in our last project ...advised by the supplier that meter would not be replaced... there it remains...we are in the Southeast (Kent).

What is the consequence of cancelling an Economy 7 tarriff with your elec supplier? eg I have 3 storage heaters - they appear to be on a separate consumer panel. If I get Econ 7 terminated (cos the storage heaters don't suit my needs) does that mean that the power to the storage heaters is never switched in and so no longer available OR it is permanently switched in and available albeit on a standard (ie not Econ 7) tarriff?
(The interest comes from being able to use those spurs currently supplying the storage heaters to power other devices, but if cancelling Econ 7 means that there's never any power, it's a backward step!)
Thanks!0 -
so am i understanding this right. economy 7 meters are more expensive than a standard charge on electricity? do i just ask to swap to a different tariff?
looking to change suppliers on gas and electric.Things will get better day by day.0 -
Economy 7 Economy 7 is a tariff that is usually used by customers who have electric storage heaters. There are two price bands in this tariff - low/heating and normal.
The normal price is charged for units used during the daytime, usually 8am - 1am, and this is for all electricity used.
The low/heating price is charged during the hours of 1am - 8am (usually) and is for units used in heating storage heaters and water and also for all other electricity used during this time e.g. lIghts, fridge etc.

Should i change the tariff being im on gas heating and gas cooker?
We do work so heating isn't on until we get home unless its the school holidays. And it is only the basic electrical things that are left on all the time. fridge, freezer , alarm clock.
you advise would be gratefully appreciated.Things will get better day by day.0 -
I work for BG and would say that if you don't have E7 radiators then you don't need to be on an E7 tariff as you will be paying considerably more for the electricity you are using during the day. I would check with your supplier that you are on a standard domestic tariff or even consider an online tariff as these are often cheaper depending on where you live.
The only exception to this would be if you had timers on electrical appliances which turned them on during the night!!! If you did things like the laundry, dishwashing etc at 3am and not during the day then you would save by having E7 and not doing these tasks during the day. You don't need to have your meter changed to have the tariff amended and your energy supplier should be able to confirm the tariff for you and amend it if necessary, (Its easy to do!!!) Also, regarding your meter you could find that again depending on where you live that if you had it changed there would be a charge for changing it. Regarding E7 timebands these again vary considerably according to region and the time of year i.e. Summer or Winter period, so you would need to check this as well.
Hope this is of some help to you. Happy New Year!!!loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0 -
30% was my breaking point for changing from E7. The meter was changed by Southern (on behalf of Ebico), and parts were taken from the old meter b y the engineer and the rest dumped.
He coiled up the spurs/tails and left them in situ ready if ever I moved back to E7. Half an hour job, on time, no problems......E7 is only worth it with a well insulated house and the extra daytime charge killed it for me.0
