Re heat pumps, if she qualifies for ECO4 she'll probably get one for free together with extra insulation and solar panels.
Speak to her energy company to start with and see what they say.

    • Speak to Citizens Advice about hardship schemes and maximising any unclaimed benefits.  The best solution would probably be a heatpump.  IIRC costs of as little as £1500 (by Octopus, after the government grant of £7500) have been mentioned by others
The £7500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme is only available if you are replacing a gas or oil fired boiler. For an electric only household, you'd need to look elsewhere (perhaps ECO4 funding or local authority grants).
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

    • Change to single rate if on Economy 7: most suppliers (apart from unhelpful Ovo) will happily do this without a meter change.
Not true, Gerry. An OVO employee posted this more than three years ago, while accounts were being migrated to a new billing system:

... whilst the function to change your meter to a single-rate mode does exist, unfortunately we’re limited by the current function of our billing system to remove the extra register here.  This shouldn’t affect the management of your account whilst with OVO - you may notice that you’ll still be charged for day and night-time usage, but as we’ll use the same unit rate for each register your overall charges will be the same as they would be on a single register.

I don't think this has changed in the interim, but I can assure you it works as intended. My own OVO account is set up for Economy 7 with day and night rates set to the same figure.
    I'm not being lazy ...
    I'm just in energy-saving mode.
