Is British Gas defrauding us?
Hi everyone.
Following a year of problems with BG and Ofgem awarding me almost £600 in compensation I've been keeping a close eye on my bills (which they still keep getting wrong) I've noticed something peculiar. Take a look at the account summary pictures below. They look normal until you check the maths. On my 3 latest bills they are overcharging by 1p.
Now this doesn't sound much and it isn't, but consider this. If they are doing this to everyone of their 7.5 million customers that equates to an extra £75,000 income every billing cycle. I mean, who else checks the adding up on their bills.

Fraud or genuine mistake?

With a balance like that you are costing them a lot more than a 1p
Problem is someone else is picking up the tab0 -

Did you miss the bit in my post about my dispute over incorrect bills? I wasn't paying them because they kept getting it wrong, and still are.0 -
I almost replied "NO" to this thread subject before even reading it.
But, I didn't.
Bit the answer is still "NO". This will simply be how things are displayed on the statement due to rounding for display purposes
So, in the first example
£-1827.08 could actually be -1827.079 rounded up for display
£1281.73 could be 1281.721 rounded up for display
Adding -1827.079+1281.721 gives -545.358 which is then rounded for display purposes as £-544.36
Ideally they should round to ensure things do total up.
There's then the added confusion as to what rounding up a negative number actually means. eg, does rounding up -2.5 take it to -2 or -3? I2
