How many notes was it? Most machines have limits on the number they'll take, and even if they were all £20s that'd be quite a few to do at once (50).I once had an issue with a paying-in machine, but after 3 tries it spat out all the notes, not just the ones it wouldn't accept.0

Ive never tried notes but @ Christmastime couple years ago I put putting (a lot) of coins into the coin ATM at HSBC Bank, halfway through it doing what it does, it shuts down and tells me there is an error. I went to the floor walker and she went through a door to behind the machine and done something and it started back up and contiued counting what was left in the tray at my side. I thought what it had counted would be "lost" but it remembered what it had done before closing down. Like I say though I don't have any experience of bank notes.

Humas are not infallible - I had a deposit miscounted by £200 in a Halifax branch and when I said this to the staff member, they directly accused me of lying or being unable to count. The manager intervened and said they'd check at the end of day. Voila sheepish call from Halifax manager early evening saying that till was £200 over, deposit had been corrected and did I wish to make a formal complaint.1 -

The staff member went round to the back and found the hopper had jammed, she took out a tray from behind the machine which contained all my coins that had not gone into the machine's vault. She also said there were coins all over the floor which she had gathered into the tray as well. I was to pour them into the machine again, and it did resume counting from £25.
In the end the total was £75 which sounded like the £25 I put in before the error got double counted.
The staff member said they would check the machine at the end of the day. Later she did call me to say there was no discrepancy, and if I was sure I had only started with £50, then the extra £25 must have come from the machine overflowing with a previous user which may have caused it to spew the coins over the floor of the back office. Since nobody else complained about being short-changed I got to keep the extra.2 -
