Unless the OP's friend frequently changes email service providers, then you might be able to go back further by checking PayPal transaction emails.1

Just asked the bank and they do go back further than 7 years. Only the online statements are 7 years. I asked how far back they go, but they didn't seem to know. "15 years" was mentioned, but I think he just randomly said that number.0
