Thank you everyone for your help. I used the one liner as advised and received the following email from POPLA:

"The operator has contacted us and told us that they have withdrawn your appeal.

If you have already paid your parking charge, this is the reason your appeal will have been withdrawn. Unfortunately, you cannot pay your parking charge and appeal, which means that POPLA’s involvement in your appeal has ended. You will not be able to request a refund of the amount paid in order to resubmit your appeal to us.

If you have not paid your parking charge, the operator has reviewed your appeal and chosen to cancel the parking charge. As the operator has withdrawn your appeal, POPLA’s involvement has now ended and you do not need to take any further action."

It appears they've withdrawn the parking fine based on this one line. No idea how it works but it did work and that's what's important!

Now tempted to create a sign to stick at the carpark entrance warning people of the scam!!

Yay!  Easy when you know how v Smart Parking! 

But next time, DON'T say who was driving in any appeal...!

That was a winning point down the drain and you merely got lucky with Smart, that they are unique and the landowner point always stops them, too.  Would not have worked v another PPC.
