I have been paying life insurance every month from my account , my wife dealt with these matters and sadly when she passed I have not got a clue or cannot find documents ,I paid Phoneix life every month and when contacting them they cannot find myself or my wife in their data bank or policy , I think they took over policy years ago , I have only the bank transfers as proof and people on phone will not take it any further than to say mail them , has anyone any advice or been through anything similar ?

it looks like a complicated firm with lots of transfers between various firms. So first thing I'd try to check is - are you talking to the correct company. At the top level there's Phoenix Life and Phoenix Life Assurance. And then in Dec they transferred some policies to abrdn. So that gives you 3 options of where to look!

Each office's system is not available for the others to see. So, you need to contact the right Phoenix office.
