Additional VED costs

Hi,

I currently pay additional VED on my second hand car which celebrates its 5th birthday this month, being 5 years since the car was first registered in January 2020 (as per the V5C). However, I have just received confirmation of my monthly direct debits for the year from DVLA which shows I will still be paying the additional VED until April this year, 3 months more than I originally expected (c.£120 extra in total).

Does anyone know when the 5 year additional VED clock starts ticking down, as I would have expected this to be from when the car was first registered but this doesn't appear to be the case?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as not sure if this is correct or whether I need to challenge it!

Thanks

    Yes AFAIK its 5 years of payments from the 2nd time it's taxed. In your case 1 Jan 21; 2 Jan 22; 3 Jan 23; 4 Jan 24; 5 Jan 25.

My 19 plate acquired in Nov 19 had it's first normal VED in Nov 2024.  Car is 6 in March.
    1 Nov 19; 2 Nov 20; 3 Nov 21; 4 Nov 22; 5 Nov 23
We got no reduction from April 24 onwards when we paid annual VED in 2023!

Put the details into https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ and it'll tell you.

Does the current tax expire in April?

the five years normally starts one year from date of first registration so the extra luxury car VED is payable from year two for five years so drops off the day the car becomes six years old

    what may have happened w
ith your is the car was sold after three months and the first years VED was cancelled on the date of sale and in that case the luxury car VED starts the day the next VED/TAX is paid so runs for five years and three months rather than the full six years
