Utilita Smart Energy Tariff Inaccuracy on MSE Energy Club

I have a very low usage Electricity account (150 kwh/yr) & Utilita is coming up as by far the cheapest so I have clicked through to their website & found that although MSE displays this as a 'direct debit' possible tariff, Utilita application for the tariff does not allow this.

Instead, the Utilita website only permits 'pay as you go' (ie preload up your account, rather than a credit account which is paid by direct debit every month). Very impractical to me, but I expect it saves them a lot of money in not having to chase unpaid bills.

Can someone from MSE look at this & if I am correct, please confirm below & adjust the club search engine/ results to display 'pay as you go only' for the Smart Energy Tariff'? Shame, it would have saved me a lot of money.

Utilita are principally a PAYG supplier. I think you're right that their no standing charge tariff requires PAYG.

"Very impractical to me" If you get/have a smart meter can top up online...
  • Agreed, quite misleading.  PAYG is no good for most people.

I looked at Utilita as an option for gas only as 99% of my bill is standing charges, however their only option seems to be to change suppliers for both gas and electricity which I don't want to do.  Has anybody tried to switch for just gas?  My electric is about 50/50 between standing charge and usage (on Agile) but having had a horrendous experience with Scottish Power I am loath to switch that from Octopus who at least have half decent customer service ...

If you're not subject to an exit fee, it might be worth switching both gas and electricity and then a month later switching electricity back to Octopus.
Presumably the worst that could happen is that Utilita could block the switch, but you could just quit them completely.
