Travel Insurance - cancelled due to new illness

I took at travel insurance and declared existing medical conditions.  My husband has since had a problem and is waiting for a referral re his heart.  I notified the travel insurance company and they have advised -  we cannot continue to cover you for your trip, due to the undiagnosed medical condition. You can either, submit a cancellation claim for the cost of your trip if you will not be travelling due to this change, or we can provide you with a full refund of the premium paid for you to seek alternative insurance. Is this normal practice?  We dont want to cancel this holiday but obviously until we know more re my husband's condition wont know if we have to or not.

Insurance Companies do not like the unknown.   If your husband's condition can be treated by tablet then insurance (at a cost) may not be an issue.

Would it be reasonable for me to ask that they extend the period until they want to refund until after my husband has seen consultant?  He is currently waiting for a date but will hopefully be within 4 weeks or so?

I doubt they will extend the insurance, precisely because of the unknown outcome, but it doesn't harm to ask particularly if the planned date of travel is after the date of his consultation with the consultant.  If you had a firm date for the consultation they may consider it.
