Moving in. Existing supplier at new home is fixed tariff deal. My position?
Hello, hope someone can advise, thank you.
I'm moving into a property which I have bought, where the previous occupants were tenants. The landlords live in New Zealand and decided to sell.
The electric is supplied by British Gas and it is a fixed price tariff until May 25. I don't want this deal.
Does the deal belong to the property or to the tenants?
And how do I go about getting a new deal with a supplier that I want?
I've tried to get in touch with British Gas but as with many suppliers of utilities it is endless deadends of clicking links and the chatbot isn't helpful.
Thank you.

You should agree a tariff with the supplier using the readings when you moved in - once you have done that you are free to move to a new supplier - unless the terms of your rental agreement say you can't.
Go to the BG website, select moving home. select I'm a new customer and go from there.

Once you are set up - then you can go to a new supplier - so make sure you don't pick a fixed tariff with BG.0

it belongs to the tenants, not the property
set up a new account with BG and then switch if you want0 -
When you become responsible for a property, you take meter readings and inform the current supplier (BG) you are the new occupant from XX date. The previous fixed deal is nothing to do with you, it ends when the old occupant is no longer responsible for the property. You start on the deemed tariff with BG (usually the price capped variable tariff) and once all set up you will be free to switch suppliers at your leisure.

1. Any fixed term deals are between the previous occupants and British Gas and nothing to do with you.
2. When you move in you give the meter readings ro Britiah Gas and set up a new account in your name.
3. By default, unless you agree otherwise (which is entirely your choice), you will end up on the standard variable tarriff.
4. You can then switch to a deal with BG or move to a different supplier.
5. Clauses in your tenancy agreement which forbid you from changing supplier are likely to be unenforceable.
