Declaring capital to UC - should we deduct salary?

Options
Hi All,

My husband and I claim UC, and have been declaring the exact amount of money that's in our current accounts and savings accounts on the 1st of each month (Our assessment period runs from 2nd to the1st).

I've just been reading through the government guidance on UC and it states that income is only counted as savings if it hasn't been spent by the assessment period after the one in which is was received. Does this mean that my husband should be deducting his salary from the total in his current account before declaring how much he has in his bank account each month? I confess to finding it quite confusing, there's nothing that specifically tells you to deduct your salary, but the example on their own website seems to indicate that the money doesn't count until the next assessment period. (I should add that I am autistic and I find it difficult to process guidance where the instructions aren't very specific, so this has left me flip-flopping as to what is the right thing to do).

As I understand it, someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Yes, deduct all income received in that assessment period.

    For example:

You have £8000 in the bank, you were paid £2500 and received £1800 in UC, you should deduct £4300 and declare (or not because it's under £6000) £3700 in capital.

You can also deduct Cost of Living payments if you kept them.
