Changing to Universal Credit

Options
Hello all,

I have tried looking for the answer myself before coming here but all answers have been AI generated and I know they aren't always accurate.

I'm wondering if someone will be able to help with a query that I have.

A few years ago I bought a house via mortgage and cover the household bills. My mother lives with me and contributes towards some of the bills, she is on benefits but has recently received a letter to say that she will be moved onto Universal Credit, we knew this was coming at some point so it isn't too much of a surprise.

My concern is that I have seen online that they take deductions out of UC if you have a non-dependent as they assume the non-dependent is contributing to the monthly rent. Obviously in our situation I already cover the mortgage fully and everything is in my name.

Will they still make this deduction from her benefit even though she doesn't receive housing support? Due to medical reasons this is her only source of income and I just want to check whether she will be deducted or not as it is showing as £90+ to be deducted a month.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Clueless Daughter

There will be no deduction on your mother's UC.  Non-dependent deduction is only possible if receiving the housing element of UC, (which your mother won't be).

Just FYI if you want to avoid AI rubbish when you search Google, you can click on the 'Web' tab at the top that will just give you web results.

Image description: a screenshot from searching 'how to avoid Google ai'.  Underneath the search bar are tabs: all, videos, flights, finance, web, images.  Web is circled in purple.  The screenshot is cropped so all we can see if the results is that the first is from r/tech support on Reddit.

There are ways to set that as the default if you'd like, but I'll leave you to Google it and find a solution that suits you.
  • Thank you HillStreetBlues! As I have never personally had dealings with the benefits system I'm completely clueless to the ins and outs so thank you again for confirming :)

Spoonie_Turtle thank you for this also , I wasn't aware this was possible so greatly appreciated!
