First of all are you running Windows Home or Windows Pro

Windows Home does not even have a Bitlocker - if you have Home you are talking about device encryption on your C drive.

If you don't want it on simply go to settings and turn it off - you can Google how but I believe it is under the security settings

Turn the slider switch off and you will see a message about the drive being decrypted

I doubt that it's the cause if you feel it's that noticeable.
It is Windows 11 pro and it is just the lack of performance that bothers me
I have had Intel i7, powered devices for many years but this is a max 5.3 Ghz AMD Ryzen 9 powered beast with 64Gb DDR 5 memory which I expected to be astonishingly fast but is just fairly quick.....

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

For a laptop that's taken out the house, I'd look at other optimisations before disabling BitLocker.  For example, I use Photoshop for processing large RAW image files so have excluded .ARW and .PSD files files from being scanned by Windows Defender. I also reduce animations and visual effects.

What I would do is decrypt Bitlocker and then test your system and see if you noticed a difference, if you feel it's faster re-encrypt it and test again.
    Let's Be Careful Out There

45% is probably a worst case synthetic test though, I agree.
Unnoticeable to the average user is the reality. So giving up other benefits, especially security is not really a sensible choice, again for the average user.

Also never had a laptop stolen, but wouldn't want one unencrypted to be so if it were to happen.

Bitlocker also helps when disposing of a device. Wiping drives which are encrypted is safer than unencrypted.

When the time comes to dispose of a device - I prefer the hammer to wiping !!

So what else could it be ?
The BIOS is limited in options - fast boot is set

What motherboard and cooler is being used with the 5.3 Ghz AMD Ryzen 9? Your BIOS should offer features such as a Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) to overclock, DOCP to optimise RAM access,  Q-Fan Control so the CPU doesn't throttle due to overheating.

I'd run Passmark or Cinebench R23 to get a measure of your rig vs. other with a Ryzen 9

Also, do you have an M.2 SSD stick set to NVMe mode in BIOS/UEFI? An SSD used in SATA mode isn't fast, something like 500MB/s compared to NVMe starting at 3,000MB/s

    Its a mini PC

MINISFORUM UM890 Pro Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS (up to 5.2GHz) Mini Computers, 64GB DDR5 5600MHz RAM&1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, Mini Desktop Quad Display HDMI/DP1.4/USB-C, AMD Radeon 780M/Dual LAN 2.5G

I believe that my (Kingston) M.2 is set to NVME - 3000MB/s

What actions are you actually observing as being less performant than you would expect? Bitlocker would only have an effect when read and writes are occurring on the drive.

That is a mobile CPU so I'd be looking at the windows power profile to see if it's set to maximum performance: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/change-the-power-mode-for-your-windows-pc-c2aff038-22c9-f46d-5ca0-78696fdf2de8

At least change it to maximum if it's not, do some tests and see if it makes a difference

Ah, a Mini PC with laptop CPU and integrated graphics. That puts a different light on things.

At least the mini PC claims to come fitted with a nvme SSD! I feared for a minute it might be a compact flash type drive.
