2011 Mazda 2 key fob issue

Options
Hi
Ive taken my Mazda key fob apart to replace battery for first time ever and it’s fallen to bits, hope it’s just age and nothing I’ve done. I’m a bit worried as I don’t have a spare. Also it’s the wrong battery I’ve got so at least I’ve looked what I need and ordered one to come tomorrow. There is no point me trying to put it back together until battery arrives because I will have the same problem. I’ve had a little look and I’m nervous that’s it’s very fiddly & awkward. My question is can I just use key in meantime & also where is best place to order a spare key fob. Think it’s to be coded. I’ve not got a spare which is always risky so would like to get one sorted now. Thanks in advance

Suggest you look online and check if that key has an embedded transponder chip and if it does, make sure you have it.

Timpsons are very good for sorting out car keys.  Last time I used them it was about £25 but has likely gone up in the last several years.

    A bit late but-

Modern keys have the ignition security transponder built into circuit board of the remote button part, older keys have it in the key part, usually a small black cylinder. It shouldn't fall out when you remove the remote button part, or it would get lost every time you change the battery, but there is no accounting for some "design choices"..

Anyway, if the security transponder is in the button remote part, the car wont start (it shouldn't turn over even) with the button remote part missing, and there may be a key symbol on the dash. If this happens DO NOT KEEP TRYING TO START IT.

If the transponder is in the key part, it will just start up and run.

Nissans I know for a fact will lock the ecu after a very small number of attempts to start without the correct transponder - 5 I think, and then need you to spend ££££££££££ getting someone to come and unlock it so the legitimate key will work.
(An absolutely brilliant "design choice", if someone tries to steal your car, but couldn't start it, you won't be able to start it again either...)
