Vehicle Tax Refund
Our son has high functioning autism, and lives independently quite a distance from us.  He sorts out most of his life admin himself, with a little bit of help from his mother and me.  In May last year he swapped his car, and received a vehicle tax refund cheque of around £140.  He never mentioned it to us and we assumed all was ok.  It turns out that he didn't bank the cheque and has since discovered that it must be banked within 6 months of issue.  Is there any way he could get the cheque re-issued or would it now be written off by the DVLA?

You could try using the following. Its for the wrong name re-issue, but maybe covers your situation as well.

Doing a web chat with them maybe a good place to start as well https://contact.dvla.gov.uk/vehicle-tax0 -
Try banking it first, unless it has actually been cancelled it is likely to clear every though it is over 6 months.0

All cheques are valid for six months after the date on them - we're just out of practice at them, because they're so rare now...
But definitely try putting it in. Chances of it actually bouncing are slender.0 -
Technically speaking it’s not a cheque but a payable order. Like cheques, they are voided after 6 months, and, from experience, departments will cancel batches every 6 months if not presented.0

...which (in case there's any confusion) just means the individual order is cancelled, not that they won't reissue it if requested.Bonniepurple said:Technically speaking it’s not a cheque but a payable order. If you contact DVLA on their webchat, you can give the details of the cheque, mainly the reference number and they tell you to return the cheque with a covering letter and a new cheque will be issued to you.0
