    Nationwide do have a credit card. According to this page, the minimum salary is £5k.

    One advantage of Nationwide is you can go into branch and discuss with them, showing them payslips from your current jobs.
    If you are willing to wait till your placement, you could apply for Nationwide or other credit cards. For evidence of salary you could show a letter from your employer detailing your job and your salary, or you might have to wait till your first payslip is produced.
    Are you moving address for your placement? In which case you will have to get ont he electoral roll at the new location and I don't know how long that takes.
