How do I choose the right windows for energy efficiency in my home?

You have a few options:
- become an expert in windows/energy efficiency yourself (it might be useful in other ways, e.g. advising family or friends)
- find someone who is an expert but doesn't sell windows (any friends or family members who are experts in enery efficiency?)
- find a consultancy/architectural service that will recommend what you need (for a fee)
- find a window company you trust and accept their recommendation
You should look out for firms that have a properly thoughout plan for how to install the windows in an energy efficient manner. Just filling gaps around the frame with any old expanding foam isn't good enough for a properly efficient installation, although if you don't want a super-efficient installation, there are expanding foams that are designed to be insulating rather than just gap-filling.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
tacpot12 said: The right answer depend on how bothered you are about the efficiency of the new windows and whether a hgh specificaion makes sense in relation to the rest of the building. There is no point having A++ windows if the roof still only has 100mm of insulation in it and you can't afford to upgrade this because you've sepnt all your money on new windows.A well fitted A+ window will out perform a poorly installed A++ window. Also, don't get let the salesman tell you their A++ frames are better than everyone elses and save loads of energy. What is more important is the glazing units and fitting - Frames only account for a small area, so contribute (relatively) little to heat loss. But I smell a rat - Five minutes after the OP posts his query, the spammer plugs his company. Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -

Plus the query was rather brief to say the least.0
