Tax credit overpayment from 2013

Options
My tax credits stopped at the beginning of December and have had a letter saying I have an overpayment from 2013. How can they not have picked this up before. I’m assuming government departments don’t come under the 6 years statute barring?

It's statute barred for court, they can and do take it from benefits such as UC or attachment to earnings.

Best thing to do is contact them, if it was a joint claim it may have been split in half - half to you and half to the other claimant.

You can set up a payment plan - which is very simple and then pay it off monthly.

I had the same thing happen to me last year. Out of the blue a letter stating I had been overpaid over £1000 in 2012 in universal credit payment which they then proceeded to take directly from my salary via my employer, as apparently they had been trying to contact me at an old address and I had not responded. They seemed to be able to find my details via the tax system of my current employer but made no effort to track my address sooner.

It doesn't seem like any of the departments actually "speak" to each other!
