I'm currently in Spain and my iPad is playing up - is it ok to look at buying a new one here or would there be issues? Thanks 👍

Should be fine, the iPad itself is universal. The only thing that would be country specific would be the the charger, but I'm not sure they supply one nowadays. Your old one will work, unless it it is Lightning, the new iPad will be USB-C.1

The only problem might be the warranty. Read it carefully as i have seen people have issues getting repairs but they bought in the usa, might be different having bought in Europe1

If you are buying an iPad that is both wifi and cellular, some new iPads use esims for cellular connectivity. When I bought my first iPhone in 2011, I was told you could take it to any Apple shop in the world to have it fixed. If you have the time could you take your current iPad to an Apple shop to be looked at by staff at the genius bar?1

Thanks all much appreciated! I'll also check at local Apple shop genius bar 😉1

In the interests of full disclosure:When I was told about the international repair, that was in relation to buying the Applecare as well as the phone. However at the time Applecare only lasted 2 years. Nowadays there are 2 versions of Applecare, one lasting 2 years and other other lasting whilst you pay the monthly fee. However I found by ringing the Apple support line in the UK it did not matter whether I had Applecare or not, they helped anyway.
Edited to add: I don’t imagine you willl have problem at any Apple Store,In 2017, I was told by a staff member at the Genius bar that Apple only supports iPhones for 5 years from the model's release date, that is keep hardware parts in stock. However in 2020, I was told by a staff member at a different Genius bar, that Apple recognises that people keep their phones for longer than 5 years, so they support phones whilst the parts are in stock. So potentially longer than 5 years. I imagine it might be the same for iPads.1 -
Will the keyboard be the same as a UK spec one ??
Or are they universal ?

Strictly speaking VAT is going to be payable to HMRC when you import it back into the UK.
Though if you throw away the box before packing ...1 -
Keypad will be the same apart from the £ symbol not sure if it will have it.0
